Keith and Kevin were both unable to hunt opening morning of the 2008 season and waterfowl hunting
just isn't a solitary activity to me anymore so I was grateful to receive the invitation to hunt with Ryan Gregory, John
Dubblestine and their friend who owned the farm where we planned to hunt.
The field we were headed to was definitely the "X". Birds had been using the field quite heavily for the last few days so we
figured that reaching our limit could be expected.
The morning was very calm but unfortunately, it was also very foggy. The fog took quite awhile to lift
which delayed the birds activity. We had about 45 minutes after first light to relax in our Redhead Layout Blinds and catch up on
some lost sleep.
The first birds of the morning were a pair of Woodies and I don't know if it was the bright plumage of
the male that caught everyone's eye or what but we all seemed to shoot at the same bird which got absolutely peppered while the hen
flew away no worse for the wear.
When the geese finally started coming everything happened so fast that we didn't even have time to collect the
casualties until it was all over.
At one point in the flurry of shots, we managed to find a minute between flocks to quickly take a count of birds
and found that we were only one away from a limit! Talk about cutting it close. Ryan was given the go-ahead to fill the remaining spot and
wouldn't you know it but a great flock of about 15 birds decoyed absolutely perfectly and we were only able to take the one goose to
end our hunt.
The layout blinds were absolutely beautiful to hunt from as they kept us warm, comfortable, and completely
concealed. At one point we allowed a couple birds to touch down into our decoys and they fed only a few yards away from our blinds, completely
unaware of our presence.
The Redhead Layout Blinds and Winchester Xpert Steel Shot were a great combination for bringing home a limit of geese
on this opening morning hunt.
Keith is shown here holding a portion of birds from a two-man limit on an evening hunt.
