  The 3 Bears

-- By Keith, Paul & Kevin Beasley --

There's nothing better than a plan coming together and that's exactly what happened on our bear hunt. Great hosts, great weather, and great bears made for a great time.

Good friend Rene Cadene, of Marathon, ON, and I have chatted about hunting for a couple years now. It was our passion for deer hunting that first brought us together but a general love for hunting and the outdoors provided a few other opportunities to hunt together. Rene came down this past Spring for a turkey hunt but a short trip and some bad luck sent him home with a few gobbler sightings but no shots fired; though he almost put his tag on a nice bearded hen. Living in great bear country, Rene was kind enough to return the favour and host us for a bear hunt near home. Knowing Rene's passion for hunting and his skills and experience to boot, we were nothing short of ecstatic about the invitation.
We all met up at Keith and Stephanie's house around 1:30am on Saturday, August 18th (yes, that was AM!). We packed all our gear in the trailer and got on the road. We traveled all night and arrived in Marathon at 1pm on Saturday, August 18th. We were exhausted but adrenaline and excitement gave us all the energy we needed.
We met up with Rene and Deb, spent a few minutes reuniting and then got right to work. We unhooked the trailer, unpacked our gear and went to freshen up the baits.
Rene worked very hard to keep three bait sites going close to home and when we got to each of them, we couldn't believe the sign! Each one of these baits were placed in great spots and had trails running out from the bait barrels in almost every direction. These trails were heavily traveled and showed sign of a lot of use. Furthermore, each bait had been emptied and one barrel had even been ripped right off the tree despite the 5 inch lag bolt holding it to the tree. To say we were even more excited now was an understatement!

Rene Cadene and Deb Hanson, were absolutely fantastic hosts. This picture is

We re-baited the barrels and then spent a few minutes deciding what trees we'd hunt from that evening. With so many game trails leading to and from the baits, it was hard to determine where the bears would come in from but we chose trees that would offer us the best advantage with the wind direction and then headed to the range. There were no stands up yet but we had brought our TreeSaddles with us so we had no worries! After some quick shots at the range we confirmed that our Hoyt bows and guns made the trip successfully and we were ready to hit the woods.
We got back to the house and Deb had prepared a fantastic dinner for us so we happily took some time to fill our stomachs before splitting up and heading out to our stands.
